Father Chuck Files: Hearing the Call

Ask our granddaughter, Lyla, what she wants to be when she grows up and depending on the day, it might be a princess, a momma, or a doctor.

Me, I knew early on what I wanted to do and I am doing it. Some know what they want to do with their lives early on, while most people take a bit of time deciding on a career choice.

What did you want to be when you were growing up? Did the choice stick or did you just settle for the first good job that came your way? Or maybe you are fortunate to do and love what you are doing.

I believe that I heard a call early on in life even though I tried to run from it. My calling really wasn’t that dramatic but I firmly believe that God called me and I responded.

I was influenced by a wonderful church experience at St. Thomas’ in Barnesboro. The people were kind and caring. The clergy were mostly tolerant of the wild children under their charge.

I heard the call early on in my life. Not that I was special. But in God’s eyes I was as we all are, special and I responded in love and faithfulness.

Now to your call. You are chosen by God, called by God, if you will. We all are called from the very beginning in our baptism.

Many believe that the call to ministry is reserved for the ordained clergy. You know, to life saving all the poor souls in need of God.

Yes, we all need saving but we also all need to realize all of us are called to ministry.

Whether it be as a housewife, banker, or one who performs in a labor intensive career. We are all called by God. A cartoon begins with a person asking, “I wonder if God can really hear me.” The next frame shows her saying, “Hey God, what should I do with my life?” And a voice from heaven responds, “feed the hungry, right justice, work for peace.” The woman replies, “just testing!” And God speaks back, “Same here.” Do you hear the call? It’s your calling.
