Father Chuck Files: The Arrival of Real Joy

We are entering what some people consider to be the most joyful time of the year. No, it’s not the snowmobilers who are delighted with the white stuff that is falling from the sky. Many people believe that the time approaching Christmas is the most joyful time of the year.

If you haven’t already heard you soon will hear that popular song telling us that it’s the “happiest season of all.” The time of Advent to Christmas are times of joy and they go together like milk and graham crackers or milk and a good chocolate chip cookie.

This time of year is joyful and yet for many the joy is gone with the bills of January and the let downs that come at this time of year as well. Where do you find joy at this time of year? Scripture provides us with another description of joy and where it is to be found. The real joy, scriptural rooted joy, comes with knowing in full certainty that “The Lord your God is with you. And that God is mighty to save.” It comes from being in a personal relationship with God.

The giving and receiving of gifts is a wonderful experience. But at Christmas we will celebrate the arrival of real joy. Gifts will break or wear out but the true joy of Christmas will last forever. The grace, the forgiveness, the mercy, the love will never wear out nor will you want to return this gift of love.

A young boy was asked what love was and the response was: “Love is what’s in the room with you at Christmas if
you stop opening presents and listen.

Stop and Listen throughout Advent and real joy will come to you. And we do this not to bring glory to ourselves or to make our own joy. We share the joy because our real joy, Jesus has arrived. Share the gift! Share the joy!
